Image file size is a huge concern. For mine, I wanted to pull the data from the device into memory, and then export that out in whatever format we choose, like GIF or VEF or CM3.
My original digital camera from 1996 did 640x480 JPEG images that were around 60K. It also downloaded over a serial port. I should dig that out and see what it could do.
