Hi John,
No, Steve said he was unsubscribing to the list for a month because of the Linux chatter, Rietveld and I simply proposed an alternative so that his email client could ignore the post that was of no interest to him without having to do a complete withdrawal.
Speaking of off-topic subjects, I would like to share my thoughts on this. If we start discussing at length alternate endings to Steven Spielberg's Jaws then that would be off topic. Linux, and dare I say, more so than Windows, is an important part of the CoCo world. From its roots to the development of CoCo software, it is part of the community. The original poster asked which distro people were using and instead of only one or two replies, we got dozens, only showing that Linux is an important part of what goes on with the CoCo.
Personally, I am against going off-topic, but sometimes, when the topic is related to the core topic, I would like to think that I can ask my friends about it or have a meaningful discussing, as long as the overall objective was to contribute relevant knowledge related to the core topic of the forum (or list). Once again, too many list users demonstrate that they don't have
enough respect for others to keep the list "on topic". Then when
someone asks them to get back on topic, the answer is for him to learn
how to ignore the posts that shouldn't have been posted in the first
place. That's just sad. Netiquette grade F...
Is staying on topic really so difficult? If you are just looking
for random chat, I'm sure you can find somewhere else that would
welcome it.
