Yeah, I don’t think it would be worth the effort to use small DRAMs.
A small, fast 512K SRAM can be had for just a few dollars and would
be much easier to interface. One or more of those and a small CPLD
for the logic would be all you’d need.
That’s how I would do it, anyway…
