Hi Phill,
Assuming you want to build one of the 6809 ports, the easiest way is
to use a Debian-based Linux distribution and get the toolchain from
the package archive
https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ubuntu/m6809
After installing the gcc6809 package, you can follow the build
instructions in e.g. Kernel/platform-dragon-nx32/README. Generally see
the README for the platform you are interested in.
