That little door on the CM8 would fall off if you even thought about 
looking at it, never mind doing anything that any reasonable person 
would expect to cause a problem. Since that little door isn't critical 
to function, most people would have eventually shrugged and just got on 
with things, if they even cared. Also, that fact that it hides important 
controls (like volume) would have contributed to extra mechanical 
stresses (either due to being left open or due to repeated opening and 
closing) making it more likely to fail or just be removed in frustration.

In short, it was a horrible design that didn't even stand up to 
*careful* handling over more than a short while in many cases.

That doesn't invalidate your point about people not having any finesse, 
care, or whatever for their stuff, of course. But in this case, that 
lack likely wasn't necessary to bring about the long term outcome we see 
today.
