[Coco] Fixing CoCo keyboard

Before you wire each key as suggested.... where is the tear? Half way down
the mylar cable? If so, an 'easier' fix if you can't get new keyboard....

Unsolder the keyboard connector from the motherboard. Use box cutter and
cut above the rip ribbon cable. Use a T square for straight line.

Get a thin plastic flat sheet, like transparency paper and cut it down to
the width of the ribbon cable and 1 inch heigh. Affix plastic sheet to
ribbon on the NON conductor side of mylar cable. This gives strength to the
cable when you push it in.

Purchase a flat ribbon cable with enough wires for the task. On one side of
this new cable, which looks like a IDE/Floppy flat cable, you will plug it
into the former motherboard connector. On the other side, you will need two
new connectors. One goes to the new cable. One goes into the motherboard.
This way, you can unplug and remove the cable... though you could do that
on the side of the mylar cable.

You may need some little pins to help the new cable stay in place and some
hot glue.

Now you will have a keyboard cable with the majority of it being strong
wired cable that won't crack.

This is a common issue on the Timex TS1000 and how I fix them.

Dear Universe, since I helped on this keyboard issue, can you please send
me or sell me a CoCo 1 keyboard because I'm missing 3 rubber springs...
pleeeeease.

Any CoCo Keyboard can be repaired with tons of work.

Needed, Wire wrap wire, some way to connect to the keyboard input and the
CoCo Keyboard maze document.

1. Remove the unusable mylar completely.
2. Wire each row together.
3. Wire each column together.
4. Build some way to connect to the row and column to the CoCo.

I built a keyboard using this method ~ 1980 for my FLEX system using a
SIM-1 and a largely ignored IC that outputs the key presses on a serial
line which I fed into a 6551. After debouncing it worked great. All the
keys were held in place from above, I have not looked to see if the CoCo
keys are held this way.

If not then a predrilled PC board would be needed.

Yea that's awesome! Out of curiosity, does that include inactive members
or active subscribers? Not sure if the site tracks that.

By 'Active' I mean, logs in to the site directly from time to time and/or
subscribes to email from the list.

Possibly you mean Groucho Marx, not Mark Twain?

Hi Rick,
Welcome to the CoCo List! In addition to all the Coco stuff I have, (see
my wiki page below for details), I also have a TRS-80 Model 4 and 4P.
What all are you up to? Do you build retro single board computers?
A detailed introduction please with pictures. I am eager to get to know
you and your capabilities. Take care my friend.
