There are two ways to go at this, one - and probably the cleanest - is to
redo the upgrade board that Radio Shack installed on the 3124 MPIs. Details
of the schematic and how-to proceed can be found at:

A revision to that process has the required logic chip piggy-backed on

Either way, the upgrade is not for a tender foot on electronics tinkering
