[Coco] Commodore 64. 1541 disk drive

What about the bare drive inside the case? Did Commdore have custom electronic boards on the bare drives? Or could the drive be removed from the case and uses... or the Commie electronic board ditched and a cable run into the drive for the CoCo?  I seem to recall the drive itself was custom and can't be removed and used without the Commie electronics, or a new board of some kind... Frank Swygert
