Yes, no replacement for the GIME is THE  stumbling block for making anything compatible with the CoCo3, except emulators. Just try to keep any enhancements in line with the FPGA CoCo. That would encourage more software by making anything that uses any enhancements work on both. 

The FPGA I/O board sounds like a great idea! Roll your own hardware interface simply by programming... Frank Swygert
