John makes a great point here.
It really should be on a cart, otherwise all kinds of assumptions are being made to get the program loaded. There are assumptions on the pak approach as well, just not so many.

I could probably get into this. I've never really written any diag
stuff, but it could be a good skill to develop.
Are you thinking of using some sort of test harness to exercise
the external ports too? Will you be producing a cartridge for the
software? :-)
