I'm sure they're broken. The buttons are broken off both switches and 
there's nothing to even use a plastic tool to push in to activate the 
switch.

Are you sure the switches are bad? Have you placed an ohm meter across the
switches to see is they actually close?

You need to trace power with a volt meter from the cord to the +5v to see 
what
actually is bad.
