The geometry is baked into the EPROM.  I used one of these to bridge my 
Apple 2e to a hard drive and recall having to patch the code (and 
recalculate the checksum byte).

I'm pretty sure only the later Adaptec ACB-4xxx bridge boards persisted 
geometry details on the drive itself (first cylinder was set aside for 
this purpose)
