There are lots of factors, but those "primitive" things you mention really
weren't all that primitive in 1977 (in fact, quite the opposite), and, as
was stated, all of those features evolved over time. You also can't
underestimate how important the available slots were in the Apple II
series. That allowed for a LOT of flexibility and those slots were taken
great advantage of.
