I'm pretty sure it's the chemical makeup of the plastic that causes the 
yellowing -- yellows as it ages. Different batches yellow at different 
rates. The best long term protective option might be a good paint. That 
will protect the plastic from UV rays as well as exposure to other 
chemicals, should make it last longer before it becomes brittle. Not 
original, but what's the point of having it original if you can't handle 
it for fear or breaking?
