If I go with WASD for the keycaps, then for practical purposes I need to have a full 87-key custom printed set made to get the 57 keys that I need. So I might be able to include some user-swappable keycap options at no extra cost.

Whether I can get the sheet metal and PCB made economically are still outstanding questions, of course, but the keycap cost seems to be in the "maybe practical" range.
