I understand what you're saying and applaud you enthusiasm and
passion for CoCo OS-9.
Saying it's slow is a matter if what angle you are looking at it from.
Knowing how to access the libraries within OS-9 can definitely speed
up coding and take a burden off the programmer.
For me, it how fast the resultant code can go.... every clock cycle
counts. That's what I strive for although John Kowalski is the grand
master of that.
It really depends on what you're developing as to what is best.
I'm also a stickler for the "look and feel" of software. I like nice
GUI design which is why I hate the old "70's style text screens". Of
course the irony is that I use a text only editor/assembler under
RS-DOS but I would prefer something with a better front end. I've
always used EDTASM and it has served me well.
Above all else, at least I have successfully steered this thread back
into a CoCo subject and not about Windows, Linux and Barrack
Obama! :)

Nick, as I stated, your kind of programming "should" be done in RSDOS
assembly, as you need the complete machine. But to say "OS9 is slow"
just strikes a nerve as I've heard that too many times and, mostly from
those who don't have a clue to begin with and have problems loading
programs from basic (can you spell "R.E.A.D. T.H.E. M.A.N.U.A.L.")
And No, I don't think you're unknowledged on the machine, in fact I
respect your programming knowledge greatly and have followed "Pop Star
Pilot" from the beginning, maybe even with a little jealousy, but I
think maybe you're just a little too impatient for OS9.
I too wrote in RSDOS assembly for speed when I was messing with sound
and music on the Coco. But I reached a limit (machine not OS) that
eventually caused me to venture on to bigger machines for my music
needs. But I still stuck with the Coco and OS9 to sharpen programming
habits and conventions as OS9 offers various programming languages to
work with. Besides... it's fun :-)
I would give anything to have OS9 running on my quad core AMD machine
with 4 gigs of ram... It would be a dream come true.
Sorry to give the impression of thinking you didn't know what you're
doing. That was not my intention :-)
Oh... and pass the popcorn :-P
