You are not preaching to the unwashed. 
I already know that nothing below an i386 would support an OS-9-like operating system. 

But they already have an OS and GUI. 
And their GUI looks much better than ours. 

You want something better than Multi-Vue? 
You're going to need something more powerful than a system driven by a sub 2 MHz 6809. 

A VDP with embedded 2D (or even 3D) drawing functions would help, so would a faster processor (FPGA or 68K), or a a complete FPGA replacement.
