Sounds odd to me, because I don't think that there's a design reason to do
so. Maybe I don't remember well. In any case, the most common reason to
have 5MB of RAM was not a limit, but rather that you had 1MB of RAM in a
computer that could accept up to 8MB (for example), and then you replaced
your 1MB by a 4MB, and then figured out that the 1MB can be used at the
same time as the 4MB.
Likewise for other combinations (2+4=6, 1+2=3, ...)
