I have found that the squealing sound is often caused by a disk whose
magnetic coating is beginning to flake off. Just one turn around the drive
will dirty up your drive heads. I often use a spare drive that has other
problems to pre-read a new disk to make sure a bad disk does not contaminate
my good drives. Take a look at the disk surface. If it looks like fish
scales, it has gone bad. There is no way I know of to fix that disk.
