Somewhat compiled, yes. Also, since it has both integer and real variable types, you can speed things up quite a bit using Integer variables when you can. Also, using PUT (or the I$Write system call), can be much faster for outputting to the screen.  And NitrOS-9 really helps. of course, over stock. OS-9.  :)
