You say the boot always fails from the menu or DOS 254?
First, Have you run LINK? On drive 253, there is a file called LINK/BAS. You must run this file to make OS9 run from the menu. "RUN LINK:253"
2nd. How did you get an 80 or 40 trk boot disk to a 35trk drive on the VHD? You MUST make a 35trk boot disk as there are none in the repo. Backup this disk to 254
3rd. Are you trying to boot Niros9 with DW/Becker port? then none of the above will work UNLESS there is a copy of the boot in drive 0 of the DW console and this requires the DW boot disk with Becker port support in both positions.
If you want a DW/Becker boot from Vcc to boot from the VHD, then you must make a custom boot VHD from the repo Becker boot. If you want this to boot from Mr Gaults menu in RGBDOS, then it becomes even more complicated but can be done.
I plan to upload some VHD templets of DW/Becker boots for people to use with VCC but I doubt it will be done before Fest time as I'm tied up with fixing software problems for the Coco Coding Contest till then.

Booting OS-9 from a directory on the hard drive will only work if OS-9 is
already installed on the hard drive in the first half of the drive.
I think the instructions included with my RGBDOS package explain how one would
install OS-9/NitrOS-9 on a .vhd disk. You will certainly need to boot
OS-9/NitrOS-9 from a floppy, create a new boot disk that includes the .vhd
driver package, boot from that new floppy, and then format the .vhd drive for
OS-9.
You should not use more that $5A000 sectors for OS-9 on the .vhd image or you
will overlap the Disk Basic partition.
This creation can be difficult if you are new to OS-9. A formatted .vhd image
can be found on the VCC site which has an older version of NitrOS-9 installed.
I'm not sure which directory Joseph put the boot disk on, 255 or 254.
Have you been able to boot from the floppy? If not there is a problem with the
nightly build.
