I have this one:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&p_id=4722&seq=1&format=2
and is useless for coco. It just doesn't like either the composite or
the hawk's s-video converter signal. The composite shows as black and
green striped screen and the s-video has too much bright blooming the
image so bad. Also, the artifact modes doesn't work either in s-video.
it blinks between gray/artifact colors. so annoying.
By the other hand it does accept wonderfully the commodore 64
composite and s-video signals. Even the european PAL it converts very
well to VGA.

Makes me think that the signal from the CoCo needs boosting, as more or less Gene suggests in his post on the subject.
I like his idea of a drop-in FPGA GIME though. I don't see a problem if it had to have an external power source, as long as it can be kept simple like a wall-wart with a pigtail jack run out the back. You'd need to replace the GIME socket or have a board that will plug into the original socket though. I think those would be the major hurdle.
