I think both cloud9 and roger sell the cables.  I've used 6 foot long
cables (and much longer) with Drivewire without any trouble.  With an
IO error with DIR, every time, I'd suspect other issues first.  If you
are using DW4, turn logging to ALL and you'll get very helpful
diagnostic info in the log.
