I am beginning to lean that way. Xilinx has already updated the package
AND gzipped it this time, but now my longish passwd is being bounced.
The quartus package _may_ be the better package, I have no way of knowing
since I cannot get either to install;
The link to quartus site spit out a 20M script yesterday, which when I
try to run it, as gene or as root, fails very quickly:
[root at coyote Download]# sh ./altera_installer.external.sh
Creating directory bin
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing Altera

So it appears my system is using those two packages that are newer than
altera's.
And the password I set there yesterday, no longer works today. What is
it with these folks who can't be bothered to tell you a 20+ character
password evaporates overnight? I mean how hard is to to put a max size
along with the min size? Grrrrrr. Do winderz people have to put up
with this bs?

I am thinking of ordering the DE1 board for this winters project. I have
a couple coco3 cases I can clean out, in which case I will have at least
1 stock coco3 motherboard for sale.
