As a follow up, I mentioned there were two ways to use DriveWire in
MESS but only linked to John Linville's mess patch because that's the
only one I've worked with.. tonight I got to try out Tim Lindner's
patch, and it's really cool.
John's patch creates a FIFO in the coco's address space that can be
used for input/output to a tcp connection, but it requires special
Drivewire drivers and disks, so wouldn't let you run software
originally written for the bitbanger over IP. Tim's patch allows you
to attach the actual bitbanger in the coco to an outgoing TCP
connection. You can specify the other end of the connection as a host
and port, set your baud rate, and anything you send out the bitbanger
is sent over that TCP connection, reading from the bitbanger lets you
read bytes from the same connection.
This means you can use the stock Drivewire ROMs and boot disks inside
MESS, no special drivers needed. Very cool! I really hope Tim's
patch will be brought into the mainline MESS soon. It will make all
kinds of interesting things possible in MESS, not just DriveWire.
Great job Tim (and thanks John for the original patch, which has also
been very useful)

I was successful, but had to email each trial image for testing to the requester until I got it working. It would have been so much easier had I been able to test with MESS...
