I think it was a combination of things. Probably a lot of users found the
ability to boot over DW to be a comfortable default and may simply have
continued to use those boot images "as is".
The only other person I heard from who rebuilt a system to include a hard
drive was Robert Gault, and he appears to have been using drivers built
from the CVS nitros9 sources.
It's quite likely that the issue has been lurking all along. Of course,
given my luck in breaking things, I may have caused a fork in the
space-time continuum wherein they became bad in retrospect :-).

Sure, I intend to give them a thrashing as time permits (hopefully this
weekend). Just hope I can figure out how to create a system diskette
image from the CVS sources. For some reason, this eluded me the last time
I tried...
