Bill Gates & friends of course. It slipped my aging wet ram that your name
was also Bill when I posted that, sorry. No insult intended.

A windows machine, when serving up a compressed file, has been known to treat
it as text, converting all the linefeeds to lf+cr's or cr-lf's, & I forget
which. Obviously that mucks up a binary file, almost to the point of not
being recoverable. Someone handy with a hex editor can probably fix it, but
the search & replace is not a time efficient way to spend an evening till 4am
doing.
When I questioned M$ about that 25 years ago, they simply refused to recognize
that there could be any legit reason I would want to move such a file over a
modem circuit, why that was "Piracy". The discussion of course got hot and
heavy and we agreed to disagree. That discussion has by now cost M$ as I have
never paid, other than the M$ tax for xp being on my laptop when I bought it,
another M$ tax. I simply don't need it to get the job done so why buy it.
When the coco couldn't keep up with the net, then an amiga stepped into the
gap, and when that one died in '98, linux was already running on the other
desk. OS9 on the coco taught me well, and still does, my coco3 just needs the
power cord plugged in at any time to be ready. I can log into it from here
even, using minicom. Either wired, or bluetooth thanks to Roger.
