Ben,

Poking 65495 does NOT put you in the full-blown FAST mode which results in 
loss of DRAM refresh. For this you need to Poke 65497 instead. This will 
also cause the video display to go crazy. If your DRAM contents remain 
intact, you should be able to Poke 65496 to restore 'normal' operation.
