Since we're on the subject of Linux, does anyone have any experience with SimplyMEPIS? Everything I've read points to it being the perfect distro to start with -- simply works right off the CD and has just about all the user software needed to work with, though I suspect it's missing a lot of programmer type apps and utils. It's in a live CD format that can be run off the CD or installed. A 64 bit AMD version just came out. I think I might just d/l and try it. I really want something I can load and run without compiling and working over it any more than a typical Windows XP instal... better than that would be preferred! Okay, I don't have any unusual hardware, but XP does hick-up on some hardware or program occassionally. Right now my biggest problem is it won't let me set/change the pagefile. I've deleted the old one, made sure I have an admin account with rights, and everything else I can think of, but I still get an error message stating I have no pagefile or size is incor
 rect a
nd Windows is going to manage it for me. I have plenty free hard drive space and memory (over 19.5GB in the root partition w/11.7GB free -- trying for a 2GB pagefile; 2GB of RAM). Been through the MS recommended fix and it did nothing! Basically I'm tired of the trials and tribulations with XP -- it should be a mature, stable system written and managed by professionals that doesn't have these problems. At least with Linux (which has several stable distros available) there is some excuse for "minor" instabilites on occasion -- it's part time work for semi-pros with lots of hands in it, supposedly. I know a lot of professional programmers work on it (still part time) and a good many semi-pro/knowledgeable amateur programmers. They seem to manage distros now much better than Microsoft seems to be able to, and they don't have big staffs who do nothing but manage things!!
