I still work for EDS and have since 1988. Started in Plano on MVS
mainframes as a tape mounter (nickname: tape ape). Then doing JCL,
Cobol, etc (as well as some DEC VAX/VMS and Unix) until about 3 years
ago although I never had to work with punched cards nor ALC (whew). Now
doing Oracle, client-server, Unix, C, Cobol, Powerbuilder development
(yea!).
I can remember the tape library in Plano had close to 1 million
cartridge and round-reel tapes. Until about '92, it was all humans
running the library. Around 1993, they started using robotic tape
drives to replace a lot of the humans.
FWIW, I never had a problem with MVS. I love JCL and Cobol, actually
have taught classes on them. The Unix-based system that I work on now
is a snail compared to the batch-based stuff I used to do on the IBMs.
...and IMO, VMS is so much better than Unix.
