I've also seen flaking out power supplies cause spontaneous reboots, 
random crashes, etc.

I had one just recently do this to me. A fully redundant server-grade 
power supply along with a machine that would reboot itself for no 
apparent reason. Replaced it with a new regular PC supply and no 
problems since!
