Well, he paid his dues and I sent the package. Come to find out, he isn't so much a Color Computer game buff. He's into flight sims for all platforms. This is now one of the crown jewels of his collection. Pretty extreme to get a flight sim, but it is a cool one.

I dont have a scanner, but I have been imaging a lot of Rainbows on Disc and Tape and have offered them to him if he wants to put them on the project. I will soon be posting what I have and hopefully somebody will be able to fill in the gaps in my collection. Some of the discs were so damaged that I was unable to pull some. The document feeder idea is great. That would certainly speed things up.

Just a curiosity question here... is he scanning these things one page
at a time on a flatbed scanner?

I'm hoping for sanity's sake that he's got a scanner with a document feeder.

You should be able to scan a whole magazine in half an hour if you've
got the right tools for the job. If not maybe those interested in seeing
the project to completion should pitch in and pick up a more appropriate
scanner.

Hello,

Why not just have a request for all needed issues I use to have all of
them as well as Hot Coco but lost them in a move along with all my
Coco's. I am sure like me there are many Coconuts willing to lend out
issues who still have theirs.

Also why not see if RAINBOW magazine is willing to part with copies for
the project, maybe even offer to sell copies with their official seal
then maybe they would gladly help and make a few dollars. Just a few
ideas.

There is a master list on

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ColorComputer/database/Rainbow

Update it as desired if you are a member. Change the 'Yes/No' to Yes and
'My Name' to your name.

When Lonnie Falk was asked he said he kept one complete set but he couldn't
lay hands on them. I doubt he will sacrifice them for this.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the silence over the last couple of days in regards to the
Rainbow on Disc project. Hopefully this post will answer most, if not
all, questions and concerns.

The project has been stalled for quite a few months due to a slew of
personal circumstances completely outside of my control. I won't get into
the boring details.

The constraints the project is operating under is due to the agreement I
signed with Lonnie Falk as well as my understanding of what his desires
are. He still owns the Rainbow copyright and I feel it important to honor
his wishes.

The project cannot be opened up to be a "community project" in some ways,
but I very much need help from those of you that would be willing to. Let
me clarify one or two points to provide a baseline. If a person scans a
magazine and provides images to the project the images should not be
shared amongst the Coco community at large. I would love to be able to
provide a full copy of the end product to any volunteers as incentive, but
I would have to pay $25 out of my own pocket for each set I give away -
doing this for a large number of volunteers starts becoming cost
prohibitive fairly quickly.

The biggest need is for volunteers to scan magazines and help with the
image cleanup that is necessary prior to the images being "packaged" into
the end document format. A physical inventory of what magazines the
project has in it's possession is located at
http://musicheadproductions.org/rainbow-on-disc/magazineinventory/. This
also has a list of the Rainbow on Disk files that have been uploaded to my
website since last year.

I have received several offers to scan magazines and I am going to put
together another email detailing what needs to be done when scanning and
cleaning and we can work out the details as to who does what fairly
quickly.

I have been corresponding with a gentleman who has been archiving his
Rainbow collection by using a digital camera and has a fair amount of
images archived. The image quality is not quite as good as what I have
been producing using a scanner (no offense Greg!), but ultimately the
project is for the purposes of archival and getting this out to the
community. I will post some example images for comparison this week so
that you can take a look and provide feedback. It may be that the
community at large would be happier if the project used those images and
got done quickly - if so much of the work acquiring the page images is
already done.

I truly appreciate all of the help I have received so far, and would be
ecstatic to get things moving again if possible. I am happy to coordinate
the efforts and provide a central document repository for uploading the
images.

Regards,
Michael Harwood

Vis Basic 5 is probably what I learned at Bell Labs around '97, and for
which I still have the IDE on my PC.

Is MS going to discontinue support for VB totally, or just versions 6 and
older? It's a great language when you have to construct a GUI interface to
your program. Visual C++, OTOH, has almost no such support. --Mike K.

Mike,
There is NO version after V6.0. It is NOW called Visual Studio NET.
Which is no where compatible
with the old VS5 or VS6. The last word we got was VS6.0 (VB6, VC++6.0,
and etc) support will be discontinued as of Jan 2007. This mean no more
updates or anything. VS5.0 was discontinued in 2004. Only the NEW .NET
stuff will be supported.

OK -- I knew that MS was calling their all-in-one studio dot-NET, which
seems to imply very Internet oriented (though maybe not).

But I trust that VB programs will still run on any Windows PC. Or won't
they?

And if I ever upgrade to Studio NET, will it import my old projects?
Funny we should even have to ask these questions, but this is M$ we're
talking about ... Mike K.

At least for VC++, you have the option of creating a project that
requires or doesn't require .net to be installed on the target computer.
So I'd imagine you have similar options for VB. That VB runtime DLL was
always a pain in the butt tho'...

> And if I ever upgrade to Studio NET, will it import my old projects?

I do know that VC.NET would import VS6 projects, albeit not always with
the correct options set if you had some unusual settings - like we had
when we inherited a project from a customer... that was painful.

Exactly why I always use gcc/minGW (no, wouldn't touch cygwin with a
10-foot clown pole) whenever I have the choice! The installation is a
*fraction* of the disk space, runs many, many times faster, is easier to
port to/from (eg. you have the option of using the POSIX API), and
produces executables that will run on any windows PC.

Having said that, I'm rarely if ever doing GUI stuff (bleh!) and
acknowledge that this is VB's forte, and even VC++ is more suitable than
minGW.

Mark

I use gcc on Linux to build X apps like UltiMusE.
Is minGW something that allows X source to run under Windows, as cygwin is
supposed to be? That is, is minGW a good way to port a running Linux X app to
a Win PC?
Thanks, Mike K.
