I use the term "vaccum" in imply that there is a voided space left
when water changes its state from solid to liquid. As ice melts the
displacement of sea water by the ice creates a vaccum or a void in
the volume of watrer displaced that is then replaced by the melting
ice which is a liquid.
whew! Void would probably be a better term. Both implies an empty
volume of space that is then filled by another substance.
