I made good experiences with:

- scanning in color at 300 dpi (making shure there's no interference
with the haftone pattern of the printed original)
- reducing the color depth to 16 (or if necessary: 256) palette colors
*WITHOUT* any dithering
- telling the PDF generating software to use a *LOSSLESS* image
compression (like DEFLATE, AFAIK a combination of Lempel, Zif and
Huffman encoding)
