Have any of you ever been to a 'real' auction? In those situations
where you face your competitors face to face it usually pays to bid
aggressively from the outset. There's an intimidation factor in it. I
have yet to see that strategy yield any benefit in an online auction.
It just raises the price beyond retail. You have to think of the days
run in the auction as advertising. You won't find any successful
auctioneer that will begin an auction without advertising for several
weeks in advance. In those cases weeks go by before there is any
opportunity to register a bid. Sniping is just how ebay works. Keep in
mind that the main rule in any auction is that the highest bid wins.
