Have any of you ever been to a 'real' auction?  In those situations 
where you face your competitors face to face it usually pays to bid 
aggressively from the outset.  There's an intimidation factor in it.  I 
have yet to see that strategy yield any benefit in an online auction. 
 It just raises the price beyond retail.  You have to think of the days 
run in the auction as advertising.  You won't find any successful 
auctioneer that will begin an auction without advertising for several 
weeks in advance.  In those cases weeks go by before there is any 
opportunity to register a bid.  Sniping is just how ebay works.  Keep in 
mind that the main rule in any auction is that the highest bid wins.
