I admit this confuses me.  What does this extra stuff look like?  A
dump of the device descriptor, perhaps?

Humm, I bet opening a device "raw" (with the @) changes the
permissions of the in-RAM LSN0, which gets presented to the program? I
mean, you're not opening it as a directory...

I remember playing with this on a Trivia Fever disk.  You'll have to
use ded (or some other tool) to change the disk's permissions.  

Perhaps this program can be made to poke at the appropriate bits
before writing it back?
