They had no choice. Motorola discontinued the MC6809 line. By
1989 Tandy Coco was a major user of the part. Secondly no one
was using 3 micron NMOS wafer technology anymore. The 6809
was originally done on 3 micron 4 inch wafers. That was 1977
technology. By 1989 0.75 micron was already old technology and
nobody was doing new designs in NMOS. It was costing them too
much to keep the lines operating for production.
Today if one were to do a chip like the 6809,it would be done with
0.13 micron CMOS technology and would operate with a core
voltage of 1.8 volts and I/O of 3.3 volts. CPU speed would be in the
400 to 800 MHz range.
Wished I had a spare half a million dollars and I would do that.
