What package is the USB controller in?
Anyway, surface mount is doable by hobbyists. What's not really doable
is BGA parts.
I think James is on the right track, cheap CPLD for glue logic is the
way to go:
1. If there's a problem he can reprogram the CPLD without a board turn
2. Less board space so cheaper PCB
3. Pretty small. I guess it could fit into a short ROM pak?
