A great MultiVue or other GUI won't help at all if you can't get a 
working boot.  I think we may need to start earlier than that.  Like, a 
large mega-boot that can sense what is on the system (or load what is 
needed from the config disk) and automatically, or via a wizard, get 
the right stuff in a proper boot, then that disk boots to a user 
interface with full shell or GUI access.
