To me, it looks more like your client is timing out on the server.
I haven't downloaded huge stuff like yearly archives of the list, but
I did download the entire Princeton file archives from maltedmedia (I
was polite, only grabbed one or two letters worth (A* B*) a night)
without any problems with a 28.8 dial-up which averages about 2 to 2.5
KB/s on a good day.
