Say Neil, you have any specifics?  How close did he come?  What sort of 
technology was he using (biplane/monoplane, propeller shape, etc.?)

Oh yes, Hiram Percy Maxim tried to build a large plane with a steam engine.

Plenty more people were working the problem, as evidenced by the rapid 
explosion of improved airplane designs in Brazil, England, and notably France, 
shortly after the Wright Brothers flew.  --Mike K.
