Are you talking OS-9 or Windows/Mac file names?  The latter are allowed up to 
255 chars (ISTR), which is unlimited as far as humans are concerned.

OS-9 is a bit tricky.  The 6809 version allows 29-char filenames, but in OS/K 
(68K version, as in MM/1) the length dropped to 28 chars, to allow an extra 
byte for sector offset.

I got burnt by this when transferring a disk full of files from Coco to MM/1. 
  Ended up with a 29-to-28-char filename that couldn't finished being 
created, but couldn't be deleted either.  Anyway, you should allow at least 29 chars.
