I had a similar set of problems this summer/fall season, the root cause
turned out to be two bad hard drives near the end of their warrantee.
My data hard drive started losing data, and an image backup showed much
corruption. After the corruption was repaired, the drive died on the
restoration pass.
The system hard drive just got slower and slower until it stopped
responding to commands.
No problems since the drives were replaced.
